Let’s go through this quick Photoshop tutorial : How to create and use lens flare in Adobe Photoshop. Here’s the original image below, I’ll be working with.
Now original image after creating and using lens flare.Final effect.
How to create and use lens flare in Photoshop
Open your image inside Adobe Photoshop, that you want to create lens flare on.This tutorial is using Adobe Photoshop CC but almost any version will work.
Now select your image layer and the first thing we need to do is add a lens flare directly to the original image. Even, we’re going to be undoing the lens flare effect, this process gives us a chance to set position of lens flare exactly where we want it.So to add a lens flare on original image, go to the top menu select: Filter > Render > Lens Flare.
Lens Flare dialog box appears.Lens Flare filter render simulated lens flare effect to the image. You can also adjust the brightness of the Lens Flare and also set the position of Lens Flare and we can choose from one of four different types of lenses:
- 50-300 mm Zoom.
- 35mm Prime.
- 105mm Prime.
- Movie Prime.
Choose one in the Lens Type section at the bottom of the dialog box. Each type will give us a different type of flare. Select each one to view the effect in the preview area in the top half of the Lens Flare dialog box. I’m going with the default 50-300mm Zoom lens. set the look and settings according to your need. Then press ok. Exit out of the Lens Flare dialog box. Photoshop will then apply the effect to your image and create a lens flare.
Here the image with lens flare looks like image below. The problem is we’ve just applied the lens flare directly to the image itself. Now if we want to adjust the lens flare position or any editing stuff we can’t do it because it will also affect original image And that’s not the way you want to work in Photoshop. We want separate control for Lens Flare. Now just undo the lens Flare effect by going up to the Edit menu at the top of the screen and choosing Undo Lens Flare.Or hit Ctrl+Z (Command+Z on Mac) which will undo the last step.
Click the New Layer icon in the bottom of the Layers panel which will create new blank layer.
Now select the new layer and go in top menu select Edit > Fill.
when you go in top menu and select edit > fill . It will open Fill setting dialog box .Set the Use option in the Contents section at the top of the dialog box to Black and hit ok. Now new layer fill with black color, which fills the window with black, temporarily hiding the original photo from view.
Now Apply The Lens Flare Filter in to new black layer. To add a lens flare, go to the top menu select Filter > Render > Lens Flare. The same lens flare appears in the same position in the window, this time on Layer 1 rather than on the original image itself,Now image look like below.
we need to do now is hide all of the black on the layer and blend the lens flare into the original image below it, and we can do by changing the blend mode for Layer 1 from Normal to Screen.Find the blend mode option in the top left corner of the Layers palette. Change The Layer Blend Mode To Screen.
Since the lens flare is now on a separate layer above the original image, we can turn it on and off just by clicking the layer visibility icon or we can adjest the opacity of the Lens Flare and also re-position the lens flare, transform, scale, rotate. Because now the lens flare on its own layer.
The final Lens Flare effect should look like below.
